President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed plans to travel to Benue State on Wednesday in response to the persistent killings allegedly carried out by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the region.

Speaking on Monday during the commissioning of The Greater Abuja Water Supply Network, Loops 1, 2, 5 & 6 within the Federal Capital City (FCC), Tinubu expressed his condolences and emphasized the need for unity and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.

“While I sympathise with the Benue people, I have spoken to the governor, the leadership and people of Benue to accept our condolences and try hard, very consciously, to maintain peace and harmony among themselves,” the President said.

He continued, “I have always said we are one single, huge family living in the same house, say in different rooms but living together in harmony which should be the result of our diversity for prosperity. We should be able to manage our anger and frustrations.

“I will adjust my programme and go see Benue people on Wednesday.”

In anticipation of the visit, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the National Security Adviser (NSA), the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and heads of intelligence agencies, along with the Chairmen of the Senate and House Defence Committees, have already been dispatched to Benue to appraise the situation.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga released a statement on Monday explaining that Tinubu’s upcoming visit is intended to provide him with firsthand insight into the lingering violence that has resulted in numerous deaths and widespread destruction.

“During his stay, President Tinubu will meet with all stakeholders — including traditional rulers, political, religious, community leaders, and youth groups — to seek lasting solutions to the hostilities,” the statement read.

While condemning the recurrent crisis in Benue, President Tinubu has repeatedly called on all community members and leaders to embrace peace, tolerance, and understanding, stressing that such virtues are vital for the country’s progress.

He also extended his “heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to all those who have suffered losses as a result of the crisis.”

President Tinubu was initially scheduled to travel to Kaduna State on Wednesday to commission a series of projects by the state government. However, due to the urgency of the situation in Benue, that visit has now been rescheduled for Thursday, June 19.

Top government and security officials are already in Benue ahead of his arrival. Tinubu has postponed his scheduled trip to Kaduna to prioritize this crisis. He continues to call for national unity, urging Nigerians to manage their differences peacefully and work together toward building a safer, more prosperous country.
