Television Tensions Flare as PDP Chieftain and Yeni Kuti Clash Over Presidential Visit

A heated exchange erupted on live television Tuesday morning between veteran media personality Yeni Kuti and opposition politician Segun Sowunmi, highlighting the political fault lines that continue to divide Nigeria’s opposition landscape in the wake of a controversial presidential visit.

The confrontation unfolded during TVC’s popular morning show “Your View,” where 64-year-old Kuti, daughter of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, pressed Sowunmi on what many perceive as a dramatic shift in his political stance following his recent visit to President Bola Tinubu’s Lagos residence.

Sowunmi, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former spokesman for Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential campaign, had been one of President Tinubu’s most vocal critics throughout the electoral cycle.

His surprise visit to the president over the weekend during Eid-el-Kabir celebrations sent shockwaves through political circles and triggered intense speculation about potential defection.

The tension peaked when Kuti pointedly asked Sowunmi about his apparent change of tune, questioning, “You’ve had a lot of criticism for the president; now your tune seems to have changed (after the visit).” Her follow-up was even more direct: “So when is your move?” When are you leaving the PDP to join the APC?”

The question clearly struck a nerve. Sowunmi’s response was swift and defensive: “Although I cannot see who is asking those questions, I didn’t come to your programme so you can try to be cheeky with me; stop that.”

What followed was a moment of television drama that perfectly encapsulated the generational and cultural dynamics at play in Nigeria’s media landscape. Kuti, drawing on her seniority and experience, firmly rejected Sowunmi’s characterization of her questioning style. “I can’t be cheeky with you because I’m sure that I’m older than you,” she declared with the authority of someone who has navigated Nigeria’s media space for decades.

Realizing he may have overstepped, Sowunmi attempted to defuse the situation with traditional Nigerian respect for elders: “Oh sister, oo! My auntie! I take that back. Please don’t be angry.” However, his olive branch was swiftly rejected. “I’m not your aunt,” Kuti responded curtly, maintaining her professional distance and dignity.

The exchange reveals deeper currents running through Nigeria’s political landscape. Sowunmi has expressed his readiness to work with President Tinubu’s administration, despite their political differences, a position that has drawn criticism from within his party ranks.

His recent statements praising Tinubu’s strategic acumen over opposition leaders like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have only intensified speculation about his political future.

The incident also highlights the challenging position of political talk show hosts in Nigeria, where partisan loyalties run deep and politicians often bristle at tough questioning. Kuti’s refusal to back down demonstrates the kind of journalistic independence that comes with years of experience.
