Nigeria and Russia played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw in an international friendly on Friday, with both sides showing determination and flashes of brilliance in an evenly contested encounter in Moscow.
Russia took the lead in the 27th minute following a stroke of misfortune for Nigeria as defender Semi Ajayi turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a dangerous cross. The hosts looked to build on the advantage, but Nigeria’s defence held firm to keep the scoreline unchanged before the break.
In the second half, the Super Eagles improved their rhythm and were rewarded in the 71st minute when Tolu Arokodare capitalised on a goalkeeping error, calmly slotting home the equaliser to restore parity.
While it wasn’t Nigeria’s most fluid performance, they displayed resilience and discipline to avoid defeat. The Super Eagles registered six shots with four on target, compared to Russia’s 10 attempts, only two of which troubled the Nigerian goalkeeper.
The draw offered head coach Finidi George an opportunity to assess his squad ahead of upcoming qualifiers, with several players staking their claim for regular starting roles.
