Nigerian Afrobeats superstar and Grammy award-winning artist, Tems, has taken a bold stand against relentless body-shaming after being thrust into the center of an unsolicited online debate about her physique.

The backlash began following her thrilling performance at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, where a video clip of her performance made rounds on social media.

Instead of focusing on her stagecraft and vocal prowess, internet users—particularly on X (formerly Twitter)—turned their attention to the shape and size of her backside.

The clip sparked waves of commentary, with many users speculating that the singer’s previously celebrated curves had diminished. One user, in a particularly pointed tweet, wrote: “Real one knows she just has big laps not actual ass,” igniting a flurry of insensitive comments analyzing Tems’ body down to the most intrusive detail.

Not one to remain silent in the face of disrespect, Tems swiftly addressed the chatter, taking to her social media with an unfiltered response that shut down the conversation in unmistakable terms.

“Okay 7 years in. It’s time to pack it up. I never thought I’d need to say it but you are all weird,” she began. “It’s small, it’s flat, it’s fat. Dog, IT’S MINE.” She further mocked the bizarre obsession, referencing a comment: “Show us your bumbum,” before quipping, “lol so me too I will turn and say see.”

Tems made it clear that while her body has changed with time—as is natural—she has never concealed it, nor has she felt obligated to meet the public’s expectations. In another post, she added:

“Nah show ME yours first?? See how that feels? It’s just a body. I will add and lose weight. I never once hid my body, I just didn’t feel the need to prove or disprove anyone. The more you don’t like my body, the better for me actually. But it’s enough now. Move on from my bum.”

Her response joins a growing list of public figures calling out body shaming, reaffirming the need for boundaries and respect in an era where virality often overrides humanity.

Tems, known for hits like “Free Mind” and “Essence,” has not only pushed musical boundaries but continues to shape public discourse with her fearless authenticity. Her message was clear: her body is hers—and not up for public debate.

As social media users digest her powerful statement, it serves as a reminder that behind the fame, celebrities are human beings deserving of respect, privacy, and dignity.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Tems made it clear she has never hidden her body nor felt the need to conform to external expectations, firmly urging critics to “move on” from commenting on her appearance.

Afrobeats star Tems  addressed ongoing body-shaming and unsolicited commentary about her physique, particularly her backside, after a viral performance video sparked online scrutiny. She called out the obsession with her body as “weird,” emphasizing that her body is hers alone and not subject to public analysis.
