Liverpool has officially signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, the Premier League club announced on Friday. While the club withheld details of the deal, British media reports that the Dutch international joined on a five-year contract worth €35 million (£29.5 million).

The move comes just hours after Liverpool confirmed the departure of star right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid ahead of the Club World Cup, positioning Frimpong as his natural successor.

The 24-year-old was instrumental in Bayer Leverkusen‘s historic Bundesliga title win in the 2023/24 season and made 53 appearances across all competitions as the German club finished second this year. A product of Manchester City‘s youth system, Frimpong later played for Celtic before joining Leverkusen in January 2021.

At Liverpool, he will compete for the right-back position with Northern Ireland’s Conor Bradley, who recently extended his contract by four years. Frimpong also joins a growing Dutch presence at Anfield, which includes manager Arne Slot, captain Virgil van Dijk, and midfielders Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are pushing to bolster their midfield with a second major signing, reportedly offering £109 million ($146 million) to secure Florian Wirtz, also from Bayer Leverkusen. The revised bid includes add-ons and would make Wirtz the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

Wirtz, 22, is considered one of Europe’s top young talents and played a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s 2023/24 Bundesliga title win. He scored 10 goals in 31 league matches this season and has tallied 57 goals in 197 appearances for Leverkusen since debuting at age 17. Despite interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester City, reports indicate the Germany international is keen on joining Liverpool.
