Captain Bruno Fernandes was in the starting lineup for Manchester United’s friendly against Hong Kong on Friday, despite growing speculation surrounding his potential departure from the club.

United came from behind to seal a 3–1 win, with 16-year-old substitute Chido Obi delivering a standout performance by netting twice.

The fixture marked United’s final post-season match in Asia following a disappointing outing in Malaysia earlier in the week, where the squad was both defeated and jeered by fans. Underwhelming in the first half once again, United fell behind early but showed greater determination after the break.

Their early struggles continued when Hong Kong took the lead in the 19th minute. Stand-in goalkeeper Tom Heaton was at fault, failing to deal with a well-hit but saveable effort from Brazil-born Juninho. The ball deflected off Heaton and into the net, giving the hosts a surprising advantage. Manager Ruben Amorim, visibly frustrated, watched with his hands on his hips.

Despite United’s sluggish display, Fernandes and winger Alejandro Garnacho showed flashes of creativity during the opening half. However, Fernandes squandered a clear opportunity to equalize when through on goal, opting for an elaborate finish that was easily saved.

As the weather worsened with rain and wind sweeping through the 40,000-seater Hong Kong Stadium—about 85 percent full—Amorim made sweeping changes at halftime. Both Fernandes and Garnacho were taken off, possibly for the last time in a United shirt, and were replaced by young talents including Obi and Amad Diallo, who had previously made headlines for an inappropriate gesture in Kuala Lumpur.

The substitutions proved decisive. Just five minutes into the second half, Obi equalized with a clever turn and clinical finish. The teenager then scored again in the 82nd minute with a perfectly timed glancing header, putting United in front. Ayden Heaven added a late goal with another header to secure the win for United, offering a rare bright spot in an otherwise forgettable season.

New manager Amorim, who succeeded Erik ten Hag mid-season but failed to lift United beyond 15th place in the Premier League, faces a pivotal summer. One of his biggest challenges will be resolving the future of Fernandes, who is reportedly mulling a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, Garnacho also appears to be edging closer to an Old Trafford exit, casting uncertainty over the future of United’s attacking core.

What you should know
Manchester United ended their Asia tour with a 3–1 comeback victory in Hong Kong, thanks to 16-year-old Chido Obi’s brace. Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho may have played their last games for the club, as both are reportedly considering exits. Manager Ruben Amorim faces a critical post-season ahead.
