U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday declared a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan after a series of deadly military exchanges involving fighter jets, missiles, drones, and artillery strikes between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE,” commending both nations for “using Common Sense and Great Intelligence.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also confirmed the breakthrough, noting that the ceasefire follows intensive negotiations led by him and Vice President J.D. Vance with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Rubio said the two sides have also agreed to begin broader peace talks at a neutral venue.

“We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace,” Rubio posted on X.

The announcement followed a dangerous escalation after Pakistan launched counterattacks early Saturday in response to strikes on three of its air bases overnight. The conflict had raised alarm over the possibility of a broader war.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry has confirmed the ceasefire. As of now, India has not issued an official statement.

What you should know
The conflict erupted after a wave of overnight attacks struck Pakistani air bases, prompting swift retaliation from Islamabad.

The ceasefire brokered by the U.S. halts a fast-moving escalation that risked drawing the two countries into full-scale war.

It signals a pause in hostilities and the beginning of broader peace talks aimed at resolving long-standing tensions.
