Nigeria and Google are deepening their strategic collaboration to establish the country as a major artificial intelligence and technology hub in West and Central Africa.

This partnership builds on an earlier meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Google CEO Sundar Pichai in Paris, and gained further momentum during a two-day workshop held from May 6–7, 2025.

The effort supports President Tinubu’s goal of diversifying the economy through technology, anchored on five strategic pillars: scalable digital infrastructure, workforce digital skills, AI innovation, cloud adoption in governance, and digital investment.

Under presidential directive, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is spearheading the initiative and working with Google to design practical business use cases and gather data in the key focus areas.

The recent workshop served to validate early findings and share a draft framework with stakeholders. NITDA Director General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, also met with top officials including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji, and Education Minister Tunji Alausa to ensure cross-sector integration.

Google showcased global examples of how digital strategies can improve economic stability, enhance institutional efficiency, and empower citizens. The initiative is set to benefit sectors such as education, agriculture, healthcare, and national security.

Through this alliance, Nigeria is accelerating efforts to build an inclusive and technology-driven economy.

What you should know
Nigeria’s collaboration with Google is part of a larger strategy to diversify the economy through digital innovation, with a focus on AI, cloud infrastructure, and tech skills across key sectors.
