The Labour Party has imposed an indefinite suspension on six key figures, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti and Senators Darlington Nwokocha and Ireti Kingibe, citing allegations of anti-party behavior.

Others affected by the suspension are Victor Afam Ogene, Amobi Ogah, and Seyi Sowunmi. The decision, which takes immediate effect, stems from recommendations by a five-member Disciplinary Committee formed on May 2, 2025, to investigate the alleged misconduct.

The party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, issued a statement on Wednesday confirming the action. According to the statement, the Disciplinary Committee, led by Deputy National Chairman Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, completed its probe and submitted a report to the party’s leadership.

Following a meeting on May 7, 2025, the National Executive Council ratified the committee’s findings and resolved to suspend the six members from all Labour Party activities indefinitely.

The party clarified that Nenadi Usman, whose name had surfaced in related conversations, was not suspended because she is not a registered member. Describing her as a supporter of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, the Labour Party said it had no grounds to issue sanctions against her.

The statement went further to criticize Usman’s alleged past dealings, referencing a supposed plea bargain with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and alleged asset acquisitions in Nigeria and abroad. The party accused her of lacking the moral credibility to speak on issues related to corruption.

Finally, the Labour Party reiterated its political independence, declaring that it will not participate in any coalition or merger ahead of the 2027 general elections.

What you should know
The Labour Party’s decision to suspend six high-profile members, including a sitting governor and senators, underscores its internal efforts to enforce party discipline and signals a firm stance against alliances as it prepares for the 2027 elections.
