Tragedy struck on Saturday as 20 members of the Kano State contingent lost their lives in a devastating auto crash while returning from the just-concluded National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun State.
The fatal incident occurred in Dakatsalle town, approximately 50 kilometres from Kano, as the delegation was nearing the end of their journey home.
Confirming the incident, Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kano State chapter, Zahraddeen Saleh, disclosed that the victims included athletes, journalists, medical personnel, and sports administrators.
Kano State Commissioner of Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Kwankwaso, also confirmed the crash in an official statement, describing the accident as a painful and deeply saddening event for the entire state.
Kwankwaso noted that some of the injured individuals are currently receiving medical treatment and are responding positively.
“On behalf of the Kano State Government and the good people of the state, I extend heartfelt sympathies to the affected athletes, officials, and their families,” he said.
“This is a deeply painful moment for all of us. We are devastated by the news of the ghastly accident that occurred as our athletes were returning home after representing our great state with pride and commitment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire sporting community in Kano.”
He described the tragedy as a moment of mourning for the entire state and reassured that the government stands firmly with those affected. He added that all necessary support and medical attention would be provided to survivors.
Kwankwaso expressed gratitude to first responders and medical teams for their swift intervention and promised a full report on the incident would be compiled, with appropriate actions taken thereafter.
He reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s commitment to the safety and welfare of all athletes and officials representing the state at both national and international levels.
