Ten police officers serving with the 44 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Abuja, have been killed during a gun battle with armed bandits in Makuku village, Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The officers were deployed to the community on special duty as part of efforts to tackle bandit activities in the area.
They reportedly came under attack while engaging the armed group, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.
A police situation report dated August 10, 2026, stated that information about the incident reached the police at about 7:40 p.m.
The report said the gun battle resulted in the deaths of 10 police personnel and two civilians, while another civilian was seriously injured.
Following the attack, the Divisional Police Officer of Sakaba Division, DSP Umaru Bagudu, led a team of officers to the location to assess the situation.
The team reportedly found the bodies of the slain police officers at the Makuku area.
The deceased officers were identified as ASP Bala Buba, 43; Inspector Saminu Sulaiman, 40; Inspector Solomon Jatau, 39; Inspector Ayuba Hassain, 38; Inspector Umar Yahuza, 37; Inspector Auwal Sani, 38; Sergeant Jimoh Momo, 35; Corporal Ukpong Otrukmj, 34; Inspector Adamu Abdullahi, 35; and Inspector Abdullahi Magaji, 43.
All 10 officers were attached to the 44 PMF, Abuja, and had been posted to the area for special security duties.
Two civilians also lost their lives in the attack. They were identified as 50-year-old Mohammadu Magwawara and 45-year-old Muhammadu Tiritiri.
Another civilian, 41-year-old Shehu Abubakar, sustained serious gunshot wounds during the confrontation. He was taken for medical attention and later referred to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Birnin Kebbi for further treatment.
The bodies of the 10 officers and the two civilians were evacuated to the General Hospital in Dirin Daji, where they were confirmed dead.
The attack also resulted in the loss of weapons belonging to the security personnel. The bandits reportedly took away several firearms and ammunition after overpowering the officers during the gun battle.
The stolen weapons were said to include one RPG rifle, two riot guns and 10 AK-47 rifles, along with other arms and ammunition.
