Safe Haven by Tahzan, a women’s advocacy group, has voiced strong support for Hon. Mojisola Meranda, the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, urging Nigerians to stand behind her leadership despite reports of opposition.
Speaking on behalf of the group, its convener, Zainab Kassim Ikaz, highlighted that Meranda’s emergence as Speaker represents a significant milestone for women in leadership. She emphasized that her election was legitimate, having secured the backing of over 30 out of 40 lawmakers, and any effort to undermine her position would be a threat to democracy and fairness.
Hajia Aminat Nasir Akwuh, a women’s rights advocate, also called on Nigerian women to rally behind Meranda, recognizing her long-standing contributions to politics from her early days in the Alliance for Democracy (AD) to her current role in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Similarly, Hon. Oyedele Elizabeth, a former Supervisory Councillor for Education in Bwari Area Council, stressed that the exclusion of women from leadership weakens democracy. She expressed confidence in Meranda’s ability to champion policies that empower women and address the struggles they face in politics and society.
The coalition reiterated its call for fairness, equity, and support for female leaders, urging all stakeholders, including political leaders and civil society, to ensure that the progress achieved with Meranda’s emergence is not reversed.
Ikaz concluded, “If a woman rises, she lifts others with her. But she cannot do it alone. This is the time to stand up, take action, and ensure that Hon. Meranda’s leadership is upheld.”
