United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has joined the global chorus of tributes following the passing of Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari, expressing profound sorrow over the loss of a leader he described as instrumental in promoting peace, stability, and cooperation across West Africa.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, the UN chief said he was “deeply saddened” by the news of Buhari’s death and recalled the former president’s unwavering commitment to his country and the region throughout his time in public service.

“During his tenure, President Buhari demonstrated a deep commitment to the sovereignty, stability, and development of his country,” the statement read, acknowledging the significant footprint Buhari left not only within Nigeria’s borders but also across the Lake Chad Basin and the broader West African subregion.

Guterres also praised Buhari’s advocacy for multilateralism and regional collaboration, describing him as a “strong advocate for multilateral and regional cooperation,” a sentiment echoed by numerous international leaders who view Buhari’s administration as one that consistently emphasized continental partnership and diplomacy.

Beyond the official UN headquarters, the late Nigerian leader’s legacy was honored by the organization’s top-ranking Nigerian official, Ms. Amina Mohammed, who visited Nigeria House in New York on Monday to pay her respects. Mohammed, who served as Nigeria’s Minister of Environment under Buhari and had earlier worked with him at the Petroleum Trust Fund, signed the condolence register and offered prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.

Speaking after signing the register, Mohammed shared heartfelt reflections on Buhari’s character, noting his “unwavering discipline, deep conviction, and steadfast patriotism.” Her remarks painted a portrait of a leader whose influence stretched far beyond administrative accomplishments.

“He was a true patriot who believed in his country, believed in his people and did the best that he could,” she said, affirming the sentiments of many Nigerians who regarded Buhari as a symbol of discipline and national pride.

She also highlighted his commitment to putting the nation and the continent above all else, describing his leadership as one rooted in courage and an unyielding dedication to service.

Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82 in a London clinic after a prolonged illness, had long been a central figure in Nigerian politics and military leadership. From his early days as a military head of state in the 1980s to his historic return as a democratically elected president in 2015, he carved a political path defined by a reputation for frugality, discipline, and an avowed stance against corruption.

As condolences continue to pour in from around the world, Buhari’s legacy—marked by his stern demeanor, anti-corruption rhetoric, and devotion to Nigerian unity—continues to spark reflection and debate. What remains certain, however, is the wide-reaching impact he had both within his homeland and on the global diplomatic stage.
