As Muslims around the world begin the observance of the Holy Month of Ramadan, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has extended his heartfelt wishes, calling for peace, unity, and compassion.

In a video message released on Friday, Guterres emphasized the values that define Ramadan—compassion, empathy, and generosity—highlighting the importance of reconnecting with family and supporting those in need.

“I send my warmest wishes as Muslims around the world begin observing the Holy Month of Ramadan. Ramadan embodies the values of compassion, empathy, and generosity. It is an opportunity to reconnect with family and community. A chance to remember those less fortunate,” he stated.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by many, Guterres dedicated a special message to those enduring displacement and violence, particularly in conflict-affected regions such as Gaza, Sudan, and the Sahel. He reaffirmed his solidarity with those suffering and urged for global peace and mutual respect.

Every year during Ramadan, the UN chief undertakes visits to Muslim communities worldwide, where he joins them in fasting as an expression of unity and to highlight the core principles of Islam. He noted that these experiences continue to inspire him and reinforce the spirit of the season.

Guterres concluded his message by urging people across the globe to embrace the values of Ramadan and work towards a more just and peaceful world.

“In this Holy Month, let us all be uplifted by these values and embrace our common humanity to build a more just and peaceful world for all,” he said, ending with a warm “Ramadan Kareem.”
