UK to Scrap Care Worker Visa Route, Threatening Migration Hopes for Nigerians

The United Kingdom has revealed plans to eliminate the care worker visa route in the coming months—a policy shift that could significantly affect thousands of Nigerians hoping to find work in the UK’s health and social care sector.

UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced the upcoming changes on Sunday, stating that the visa scheme, widely used by migrants, would be phased out as part of a broader strategy to reduce migration.

The proposal, to be outlined in a white paper released Monday, aims to limit the use of visas for low-skilled employment. Cooper described the existing system as a “failed free market experiment” that encouraged excessive overseas recruitment.

In an interview with the BBC, Cooper estimated the reforms could lower yearly arrivals by around 50,000, though she did not provide a firm net migration target. Speaking to Sky News, she added, “It should come down significantly more” than 500,000.

The decision follows recent electoral successes by anti-immigration party Reform UK, now polling ahead of Labour. In response, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer vowed to “restore control and cut migration . . . with tough new measures,” asserting: “British workers — I’ve got your back.”

The proposed ban has raised concerns among care providers already grappling with staff shortages. Jane Townson of the Homecare Association questioned the feasibility of meeting demand without either funding or a legal migration channel, saying, “Where will these workers come from if neither the funding nor the migration route exists?”

Cooper acknowledged the industry’s staffing concerns but urged care employers to recruit from the pool of 10,000 migrants currently in the UK under the care visa scheme. She claimed some of these workers accepted positions “that weren’t actually here or that were not of the proper standard.” She also promised to introduce a “fair pay agreement” for care workers to address longstanding systemic issues.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp criticized the reform as “a little 50,000 tweak,” accusing the Conservative government of being slow to act as migration surged past 900,000 in 2023.

In addition to the care visa changes, the government plans to tighten rules on skilled worker visas, limiting them to graduate-level jobs and restricting non-graduate visas to temporary, industry-specific roles. While the crackdown on international students will not be as harsh as anticipated, Cooper stressed that universities must enforce compliance with visa conditions.

Reacting to the announcement, Reform UK’s deputy leader Richard Tice blamed migration for growing public discontent and urged the establishment of a “separate, dedicated Department of Immigration.”

What you should know

The UK is set to abolish the care worker visa route, potentially shutting out thousands of Nigerians seeking jobs in the care sector.

While the move is aimed at slashing migration numbers, critics warn it could worsen staffing crises and leave many without viable employment paths.
