The British High Commission in Nigeria has pledged to work with relevant federal government partners once the specifics of the UK’s newly announced immigration reforms are made public.

This assurance came after the UK government released a white paper on Monday outlining major changes to its immigration policy. Among the key proposals are the discontinuation of the social care work visa route, a longer route to settlement for migrants, a reduced duration for the graduate visa, and the introduction of mandatory English language tests for dependants.

Although a definite implementation timeline is yet to be confirmed, the British High Commission sought to ease concerns by emphasizing the strength of the UK-Nigeria relationship.

“The UK enjoys strong, long-standing people-to-people links with Nigeria. We are proud that the UK is still considered a top destination for Nigerians to work, study, visit, and settle – and value the contribution this brings to the UK,” the Commission said in a statement.

It added that the reforms are aimed at restoring “order, control, and fairness” to the immigration system, while reducing net migration and supporting economic growth. The changes, it said, would be introduced gradually.

The announcement follows reports that the UK may impose visa restrictions on countries with higher rates of overstaying, with Nigeria reportedly on that list.

Nevertheless, the British High Commission reiterated the UK’s commitment to maintaining its close ties with Nigeria, describing the country as a welcoming, outward-looking nation that values diversity and global talent.

What you should know
The UK’s proposed immigration reforms could affect many Nigerians seeking work or study opportunities, especially through care and graduate routes. While implementation details are pending, the British High Commission assures continued collaboration with Nigeria to manage the transition.
