The British government has announced stricter immigration measures, making it nearly impossible for undocumented migrants arriving via small boats or hidden in vehicles to obtain British citizenship. Under the new policy, such individuals will typically have their citizenship applications refused.

A Home Office spokesperson emphasized that the changes reinforce existing measures, ensuring that those who enter the UK illegally face significant barriers to acquiring citizenship. The move aligns with Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s pledge to curb migration, especially in response to growing political pressure following the success of Nigel Farage’s anti-immigration Reform UK party in the last general election.

However, the decision has sparked criticism, with Labour MP Stella Creasy arguing that denying citizenship to refugees creates a “second-class” status. Immigration law experts have also condemned the changes, warning that they could severely hinder refugee integration.

The announcement coincides with parliamentary debates on the government’s Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Bill, which seeks to disrupt migrant smuggling networks. While Starmer has scrapped the previous administration’s Rwanda deportation plan, he has vowed to dismantle trafficking gangs as an alternative approach to reducing irregular migration.

Provisional government figures indicate that 36,816 people crossed the English Channel in 2024, marking a 25% increase from 2023, underscoring the continued challenge of irregular migration.
