The government of the United Kingdom has announced the official schedule for the forthcoming state visit of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which is set to take place from March 17 to 19.

The visit, to be hosted at Windsor Castle, will include a range of ceremonial activities, bilateral engagements and interactions with members of the Nigerian diaspora.

UK security

According to the programme released by British authorities, arrangements for the visit will commence on March 17 with extensive security operations, road closures and rehearsals for the ceremonial procession ahead of the president’s arrival.

President Tinubu is expected to arrive in the United Kingdom on March 18, where he will be officially welcomed by Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales.

A formal ceremonial reception will take place on Datchet Road, featuring the playing of the national anthems of both nations and an inspection of the guard of honour. Following this, the Nigerian president will take part in a carriage procession to Windsor Castle, where he will be received by King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

The itinerary includes a formal reception, a traditional 21-gun salute and a state luncheon scheduled to hold at St George’s Hall within Windsor Castle.

Later that day, President Tinubu will hold bilateral discussions with senior British officials. The talks are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation between the two countries in areas such as trade, security, migration management and port development.

The day’s programme will conclude with a cultural exchange event showcasing Nigerian artefacts and heritage, followed by a state banquet organised in honour of the visiting president at Windsor Castle.

On March 19, President Tinubu will begin the day with a private breakfast meeting with King Charles III and Queen Camilla before departing for London.

While in London, the Nigerian leader will lay a wreath at The Cenotaph in tribute to fallen servicemen.

Tinubu and Starmer

Tinubu is also scheduled to meet with the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, at 10 Downing Street for bilateral talks and a working lunch aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic cooperation between both nations.

Additional engagements on the president’s agenda include a meeting with members of the Nigerian diaspora and the signing of bilateral agreements at Buckingham Palace.

The visit will end with President Tinubu’s departure for Nigeria from RAF Northolt.

The trip represents Nigeria’s first full state visit to the United Kingdom in 57 years and signals renewed efforts by both countries to deepen diplomatic ties and expand collaboration across several key sectors.

What you should know

State visits are among the highest forms of diplomatic engagement between countries and usually involve ceremonial honours, high-level meetings and agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.

Nigeria and the United Kingdom share longstanding political, economic and historical ties, with cooperation spanning trade, security, education and migration.

President Bola Tinubu’s visit is expected to reinforce these relationships while opening new opportunities for investment and policy collaboration between both nations.
