US President Donald Trump cut short a meeting with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday, accusing him of being unwilling to negotiate peace with Russia. The dramatic exchange in the Oval Office has cast uncertainty over Trump’s efforts to broker a truce in the ongoing war.

Zelensky was initially scheduled to finalize a US-Ukrainian agreement for the joint exploitation of Ukraine’s mineral resources, a key component of a post-war recovery plan. However, tensions flared shortly after the meeting began. Trump and Vice President JD Vance reportedly lashed out at Zelensky, demanding he show more gratitude for US military aid.

“You’re either going to make a deal or we’re out,” Trump warned. “And if we’re out, you’ll have to fight it out, and I don’t think it’s going to be pretty.”

Following the heated exchange, Zelensky left without participating in the planned joint press conference. The White House later confirmed that the mineral resources deal remained unsigned.

Trump took to his Truth Social platform to criticize Zelensky, writing, “He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He is not ready for peace.”

Dispute Over Compromise

The fallout stems from Trump’s assertion that Ukraine must make “compromises” in any peace deal with Russia. He argued that no resolution can be reached without concessions, though he insisted they should not be excessive.

Zelensky, however, rejected this stance, presenting images of war devastation and stating that there can be “no compromises with a killer on our territory.” He condemned Russian forces for war crimes, including the deportation of Ukrainian children.

Despite the clash, their meeting had initially begun on a more positive note, with Zelensky expressing optimism about Trump’s support, stating, “I think President Trump is on our side.”

Truce Talks in Jeopardy

The dispute has thrown Trump’s mediation efforts into doubt. European leaders, including those from France and Britain, had visited Washington earlier in the week, urging Trump to maintain strong US backing for Ukraine.

Following the incident, Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk reassured Zelensky, telling him, “You are not alone.”

Trump’s shifting stance on Ukraine has raised concerns among allies. While previously offering full support for Ukraine’s defense, he now seeks to position himself as a mediator between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump also revealed he had spoken with Putin “on numerous occasions,” beyond the previously known February call.

Before tensions escalated, Trump had described a ceasefire as “fairly close” and had called the proposed minerals deal “very fair.” The deal aimed to offer Washington financial incentives for supporting Ukraine in a truce, despite Trump’s reluctance to commit US military forces to back European peacekeeping efforts.

Trump’s Remarks Spark Controversy

Trump’s handling of the situation has drawn criticism. Last week, he labeled Zelensky a “dictator” and echoed Kremlin narratives blaming Ukraine for Russia’s 2022 invasion. However, in a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump struck a more conciliatory tone, saying, “I have a lot of respect for him.”

Trump’s remarks that he trusts Putin to “keep his word” on any ceasefire further fueled Democratic backlash. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accused Trump of “doing Putin’s dirty work,” while Senator Chris Van Hollen called the episode “disgraceful.”

Meanwhile, fighting in Ukraine continues. Kyiv reported on Friday that Russian forces launched new assaults from the Kursk region, intensifying hostilities near previously liberated Ukrainian territories.
