US President Donald Trump has confirmed that the suspect in the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has been arrested following an extensive nationwide manhunt.
Speaking during a live studio interview on Fox News on Friday, Trump revealed that the breakthrough came after a close associate of the suspect alerted law enforcement. “Somebody very close to him turned him in,” Trump explained. “The person was involved with law enforcement but was a person of faith, a minister, and brought him to a US Marshal who was fantastic. They drove into the police headquarters, and he’s there now.” The president added, “We have the person that we think is the person we’re looking for.”
Kirk, a 31-year-old known for rallying young conservatives and strongly backing Trump, was fatally shot on Wednesday while appearing at Utah Valley University. Police said the shooter fired a single round from a rooftop, striking Kirk in the neck from nearly 200 yards (180 meters) away.
Hundreds of agents from over 20 law enforcement agencies were deployed in the search. Surveillance images released on Thursday depicted a man wearing Converse sneakers, a black cap, dark sunglasses, and jeans, with a long-sleeved shirt decorated with an American flag. Additional footage captured the gunman sprinting across a rooftop before leaping down and fleeing towards a wooded area, where officers later recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle believed to have been used in the attack.

Death Penalty Considered
Utah Governor Spencer Cox has vowed to pursue the death penalty once the case goes to trial. Reflecting the political sensitivity of the killing, Kirk’s body was flown back to Phoenix on Vice President JD Vance’s official aircraft. Emotional footage showed Vance laying his hands on the coffin as it was carried into Air Force 2.
Students at Utah Valley University expressed shock at witnessing the shooting and voiced concern about rising political tensions in the United States. Dave Sanchez, 26, said the tragedy left him “sick to my stomach.” He added, “We watch him all the time, and so it really does feel like one of your own family members, your own brother, has been killed.”
On Thursday night, several hundred supporters gathered at Orem Park for a vigil. Wearing red MAGA hats and carrying American flags, attendees prayed and held a moment of silence in Kirk’s memory. “It still feels insane that this happened,” said Jonathan Silva, 35. “It’s totally surreal.”

Kirk’s Legacy
Charlie Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012, carving out a space for conservative activism on college campuses and building a national reputation with his sharp debating skills and frequent media appearances. Supporters described him as a “martyr” whose death underscored the dangers faced by outspoken political figures.
The father of two cultivated a large following across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, using his platforms to champion conservative causes such as anti-immigration policies, gun rights, and Christian values. He gained notoriety for sharing edited clips from heated campus exchanges, a tactic that drew both praise from admirers and criticism from opponents.
As grief and anger reverberated through conservative circles and right-wing media outlets, Trump urged his followers to respond to the tragedy with calm and peace.
