Four people, including a police officer, were killed on Monday in a devastating mass shooting at a high-rise office building in central Manhattan.
A fifth victim is critically injured, while the shooter, identified as Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, reportedly took his own life.
The attack unfolded around 6:00 p.m. at 345 Park Avenue, a skyscraper housing major firms like Blackstone, KPMG, and the NFL. According to New York City officials, Tamura exited a black BMW armed with an M-4 rifle, opened fire on a police officer in the building’s lobby, then took an elevator to the 33rd floor, continuing his deadly rampage before turning the weapon on himself.

Mayor Eric Adams, speaking at a hospital near the scene, confirmed the fallen officer was a 36-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh. Alongside him, two men and a woman were also killed. No motive has yet been identified.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed Tamura had a history of mental health issues and legally possessed a firearms permit in Nevada. Authorities discovered a revolver, additional ammunition, and medication in his vehicle. Surveillance footage showed him entering the building and “spraying the lobby” with bullets.

The incident caused chaos during the evening rush hour. Workers were ordered to shelter in place, and eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and disbelief. “You would think it won’t happen to you, and then it does,” one office worker said.
The FBI is aiding in the ongoing investigation, and officials maintain that Tamura acted alone.

This marks the 254th mass shooting in the U.S. this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. New York Governor Kathy Hochul and city leaders have expressed condolences and called for renewed efforts to address gun violence.
