President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged state governors to provide visible development outcomes that reflect the significant financial allocations they have received, highlighting that ₦11.195 trillion has been disbursed to states and local governments from the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) over the past year.
Speaking during the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC), President Tinubu addressed APC governors directly, stressing the urgent need to intensify development efforts at the grassroots level. He emphasized that despite the record-level funds allocated, many Nigerians still feel disconnected from the dividends of democracy.
“We need to do more. Nigerians are still complaining at the grassroots. You, the governors, have to wet the ground and give more dividends of democracy at the grassroots,” the President said. “We must not rest. Our people need to feel the impact of government more directly.”
Recent figures released by the Federal Government indicated that tax revenue collection surged significantly in the first half of the year. Between January and June 2025, tax revenues totaled ₦14.27 trillion—a 43% increase from the ₦9.98 trillion recorded in the same period in 2024.
A breakdown of the FAAC disbursements from June 2024 to June 2025 revealed that ₦11.195 trillion was distributed among state and local governments. Of this amount, states received ₦6.492 trillion, while local governments were allocated ₦4.704 trillion.
During the same period, the Federal Government received ₦6.034 trillion out of the ₦27 trillion shared from the federation account.
President Tinubu’s remarks reflect growing concerns about the effectiveness of governance at the subnational level, particularly in translating massive fiscal inflows into projects and services that improve everyday lives. His call to action appears to signal a renewed emphasis on accountability and performance within his party’s leadership.
