President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has awarded Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates with Nigeria’s national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) in recognition of his global health and development efforts.

The honour was conferred on Tuesday in Lagos during Gates’ ongoing visit to Nigeria, which is focused on advancing key health and development initiatives in the country.

Gates, who chairs the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is in Nigeria to engage with federal and state authorities on improving the country’s primary healthcare system. His visit includes participation in a Goalkeepers Nigeria event, which aims to spotlight Africa’s innovation landscape and future.

According to a statement from the Gates Foundation, Gates is also holding meetings with local scientists and stakeholders working on Nigeria’s national strategy for artificial intelligence and health technology solutions.

“From Addis Ababa, Gates will travel to Nigeria, where he will meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and engage with federal and state leaders to discuss Nigeria’s primary health care reforms,” the statement read.

The Foundation emphasized its growing footprint across Africa, with offices recently launched in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and Senegal, building on its first African base in Ethiopia.

Gates’ visit comes shortly after a landmark announcement on May 8, in which the Gates Foundation pledged $200 billion in investments over the next 20 years to support global health and development—a commitment aligned with Gates’ personal vow to donate nearly all his wealth to the Foundation’s work.
