Nigerian singer Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has responded to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) after failing to attend a scheduled meeting on May 30, 2025.
In a detailed statement released on Instagram, Darlington insisted that the controversial video was “purely for entertainment purposes” and not a reflection of any real-life events. “For the sake of clarity, I reiterate that the said Instagram video was made for purely entertainment purposes only and does not reflect any previous or future event involving my person with any female, minor or major,” he wrote.
The rapper expressed frustration that what he described as a “joke” had been “blown out of proportion by persons looking for fault where none exists.”
The video, which surfaced last month, triggered immediate backlash from fans, advocacy groups, and online commentators who accused Darlington of trivializing a grave issue.
NAPTIP, tasked with combating human trafficking and related offenses, promptly summoned the artist to its Abuja headquarters for questioning. His absence on the scheduled date fueled speculation about his intentions and intensified calls for accountability.
In his statement, Darlington stopped short of admitting wrongdoing but extended an apology for the outrage caused by the video. “Without conceding to any wrongdoing, may I offer my profound apology for any bad blood or misunderstanding my innocuous actions may have caused the online community” he stated, adding that the video was created solely “for clout and entertainment purposes.”
He further committed to appearing before NAPTIP on June 26, 2025, to provide any necessary clarifications, signaling a willingness to cooperate with the agency’s investigation.
The controversy has reignited debates about the boundaries of artistic expression and the responsibilities of public figures in the digital age.
Darlington, known for his unfiltered and often polarizing content, has built a career on pushing societal boundaries, but this latest incident has drawn scrutiny from both fans and critics.
Child rights advocates have urged NAPTIP to thoroughly investigate the matter, emphasizing that joking about such sensitive issues undermines efforts to protect vulnerable populations.
NAPTIP is yet to comment on Darlington’s statement or confirm whether the proposed June 26 appearance will suffice.
