Members of various civil society organizations staged a protest at the National Assembly entrance on Wednesday, calling for Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s resignation to allow for an impartial investigation into allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The protesters, who arrived as early as 8 a.m. before the Senate resumed plenary, carried banners with inscriptions such as “Akpabio Must Go” and “Protect Women’s Rights.”
The protest follows Akpoti-Uduaghan’s accusation that Akpabio was targeting her because she rejected his alleged sexual advances. She made the claim on live television amid controversy surrounding a change in Senate seating arrangements on February 20.
The situation is expected to generate further political tension as lawmakers deliberate on the matter.
