The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has convened an emergency meeting at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
Held behind closed doors on Tuesday, the urgent gathering comes amid a rising tide of defections and persistent internal strife threatening the stability of the opposition party.
This meeting follows the recent defection of former vice-presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Their exit has significantly weakened the PDP’s structure in Delta State.
Verily News gathered that the defection wasn’t limited to just the top officials. The Deputy Governor of Delta, Monday Onyeme, several state commissioners, local government chairmen, and key grassroots leaders also switched allegiance to the APC.
This mass defection reportedly followed a strategic closed-door session in Asaba, further compounding PDP’s internal challenges.
The NWC’s emergency session is expected to address these critical issues and chart a path forward to stabilize the party and prevent further erosion of its influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
