Former Nigerian Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has been appointed as an advisor to the Club de Madrid, the world’s largest forum of democratic former presidents and prime ministers.

The group, headquartered in Madrid, Spain, made the announcement via a post on X, expressing gratitude for Ezekwesili’s decision to join its mission. “Your leadership, vision, and commitment to democratic values are deeply appreciated. We are honoured to count on your voice,” the statement read.

Ezekwesili confirmed her appointment through her official X handle, writing, “I accepted the invitation to become an advisor to @ClubdeMadrid… to strengthen inclusive democratic practice and improve the well-being of people around the world.”

An acclaimed public policy expert and democracy advocate, she praised the organisation’s commitment to addressing global challenges through collaboration and leadership. “As our global context becomes even more complex, the leadership vacuum delays solutions to ‘global public Bads,’” she noted.

Established in 2001, Club de Madrid is made up of over 100 former heads of state or government from more than 70 countries. Members offer their expertise pro bono to support current leaders, promote good governance, and resolve political conflicts.

The organisation also hosts Annual Policy Dialogues and Policy Labs on key global issues. Its April 2025 Policy Dialogue focused on reforming global financial governance to reflect democratic principles.

Ezekwesili’s appointment reinforces Nigeria’s representation in high-level global policy spaces. Her advisory role at Club de Madrid strengthens the push for inclusive democracy and underscores her continued influence in shaping international development and governance.
