The plenary session at the Lagos State House of Assembly commenced after security personnel forcibly opened the doors to the chamber.
As of 3:00 p.m., the session was ongoing and continued until around 3:30 p.m. However, more than 26 other assembly members were present at the complex but refused to enter the chamber, signaling their allegiance to the substantive Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
Obasa had earlier declared his return as Speaker, arguing that while impeachment is a constitutional and democratic process, it must be conducted according to established procedures.
“I’ve never been removed. Impeachment or removal is democratic and constitutional, but in doing that, you must follow due process. I am not against that. If I do that, then I am not democratic,” he was quoted as saying.
Obasa was removed as Speaker on January 13 while he was abroad, with Mojisola Meranda swiftly installed as his replacement. He has since challenged his removal, insisting that he remains the rightful Speaker of the House.
