New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced his willingness to collaborate with President Donald Trump on immigration enforcement, signaling a potential shift in the city’s “sanctuary city” status. Adams revealed on X that he met with Trump’s “border czar,” Tom Homan, to strategize ways to remove violent criminals from the city.

The discussions included implementing an executive order to reinstate Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at Rikers Island prison. Since 2014, when New York adopted its sanctuary city policies, ICE has not had offices inside the facility to facilitate deportations of non-citizen criminals. The new plan would assign ICE agents to criminal investigations, specifically targeting gang violence and serious offenders.

Adams emphasized his desire to work with the federal administration rather than engage in conflict. As part of his broader approach, he proposed embedding additional New York Police Department (NYPD) detectives into federal task forces aimed at tackling gang-related crime.

The mayor’s move aligns with his recent efforts to shift his stance on immigration, drawing comparisons to the hardline policies of the Trump administration. The announcement follows reports that Manhattan prosecutors have been pressured to drop corruption charges against Adams, fueling speculation over political motivations behind his new stance.

Critics were quick to denounce Adams’ decision, with the Immigrant Defense Project accusing him of using immigrants as “bargaining chips” in an alleged deal with Trump to ease legal scrutiny on his administration. The group labeled his cooperation with ICE as a “shameless” betrayal of the city’s immigrant population.

Meanwhile, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi is taking legal action against New York authorities, targeting the city’s longstanding role as a sanctuary jurisdiction. The lawsuit is expected to test the limits of federal influence over state-level immigration policies.

The controversy surrounding Adams’ position highlights the deep political divisions over immigration enforcement and the potential implications for New York’s relationship with the federal government moving forward.
