The North-West geopolitical zone in the Nigerian Senate has officially rescheduled its public hearing on the ongoing constitutional amendment process for the 18th and 19th of July 2025.
This comes after an earlier postponement that left the zone as the only region yet to hold its public consultation sessions, following similar hearings held across Nigeria’s other five geopolitical zones on the 4th and 5th of July.
The announcement of the new dates was made during Wednesday’s plenary by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Constitution Review.
He stated that the public hearing, initially slated to be held in Kano, was delayed out of respect for the mourning period declared in honour of the late elder statesman, Alhaji Aminu Dantata.
Dantata, a prominent Northern business magnate and philanthropist, passed away in Abu Dhabi on June 28 and was laid to rest in Medina, Saudi Arabia, on June 30. In response to his death, the Senate had opted to suspend the Kano hearing as a gesture of solidarity and national respect.
Senator Jibrin, who presided over the plenary session, called on all senators representing the 21 senatorial districts across the North-West to fully participate in the upcoming event and ensure that their constituents are actively involved.
He emphasized that the public hearing presents a critical opportunity for citizens in the zone to contribute directly to the shaping of Nigeria’s legal and political future.
Reiterating the inclusive nature of the exercise, the Deputy Senate President urged residents of the North-West zone to prepare and submit memoranda detailing their proposed amendments to the 1999 Constitution. According to him, the Senate is committed to conducting the review in a manner that reflects the will and aspirations of the Nigerian people.
In a signed statement issued in his capacity as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, Senator Jibrin assured citizens that all submissions would be carefully reviewed, and public contributions would form a key part of the eventual decisions made by the legislative body.
As anticipation builds, the rescheduled hearing will serve as a critical step in engaging grassroots voices on matters ranging from governance structures to electoral reform, devolution of powers, and civil rights.
The North-West zone, home to states like Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, Jigawa, Katsina, and Zamfara, plays a significant role in Nigeria’s political landscape, and its input is expected to carry considerable weight in the final outcome of the review process.
