The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly criticized the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC) for its dismissal of over 900 workers, calling it a blatant violation of workers’ rights.
In a statement released on Thursday, the NLC’s Head of Media, Benson Upah, described the action as illegal and unjust. He warned that if KEDC failed to reinstate the affected employees, the union would escalate its response.
The NLC commended the dismissed workers for protesting peacefully despite alleged provocations from the company’s management. Upah insisted that KEDC’s failure to follow due process on redundancy was unacceptable.
“We call on KEDC to come down from its high horse and embrace reason by unconditionally recalling the affected workers. This is the only way to restore industrial harmony,” he stated.
He further warned that prolonging the crisis could lead to wider solidarity actions from the labour movement, urging all NLC affiliates in Kaduna to join the protests.
