The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather forecast projecting widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across various parts of the country between Monday and Wednesday.
In its latest weather update, released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet disclosed that early morning thunderstorms accompanied by rainfall are expected on Monday across parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kaduna states.
“The remaining parts of the region are expected to be sunny with patches of cloud,” the agency noted.
Later in the day, the forecast indicates that thunderstorms with moderate rain showers are anticipated across Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Yobe states.
For central Nigeria, cloudy skies are expected during the morning hours, particularly over Niger State, with the likelihood of light thunderstorms. As the day progresses, the region may experience further rainfall with thunderstorm activity in Plateau, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kogi, Benue, and Niger states.
In southern Nigeria, cloudy weather is predicted for Monday morning. However, in the afternoon and evening, light rain is forecast for several states including Imo, Abia, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
On Tuesday, NiMet forecasts sunny conditions with patches of clouds in the northern part of the country during the morning hours. However, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rain are expected later in the day in areas such as Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, and Jigawa.
“Thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected during the afternoon or evening hours over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Kano, Katsina and Kaduna States,” the forecast read.
The central region is projected to witness early morning thunderstorms and light rainfall across Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa States. Later in the day, rainfall with thunderstorm activity is expected in Niger, Plateau, Nasarawa, and the FCT.
Meanwhile, the southern states will begin Tuesday under cloudy skies, particularly in Akwa Ibom and Cross River where there are slight chances of rainfall. As the afternoon and evening approach, moderate rainfall is expected in Ondo, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Rivers, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa.
For Wednesday’s forecast, sunny conditions with cloud patches are expected over the northern states. Morning thunderstorms with rain are likely in Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Taraba states. During the afternoon and evening, moderate rain showers with thunderstorms are forecast across Yobe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Bauchi, Borno, and Kebbi states.
Central Nigeria will start the day under cloudy skies, with a high possibility of rainfall from afternoon to evening in the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Niger, and Kwara states.
In the south, morning rain is projected for parts of Enugu, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, while other areas may remain cloudy. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to follow in Ebonyi, Abia, Edo, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom as the day progresses.
NiMet has urged citizens to remain cautious and vigilant during this period, as thunderstorms could be accompanied by strong winds, potentially leading to flying debris. Residents are encouraged to secure loose objects to prevent accidents.
“Driving under heavy rain should be avoided. Disconnect electrical appliances from electrical sockets. Stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees,” the agency warned.
