The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has reiterated its dedication to advancing tax reforms and enhancing professionalism within the nation’s tax framework.
During the institute’s 52nd induction ceremony in Abuja, CITN President Samuel Agbeluyi emphasized the organization’s longstanding role in championing ethical practices and high standards in the tax sector for over four decades.
Agbeluyi called on members to familiarize themselves with proposed tax legislation from the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, which has cleared the House of Representatives and awaits Senate endorsement.
The bills propose measures such as introducing tax agents to mediate between taxpayers and authorities—a move Agbeluyi praised while underscoring professionals’ pivotal role in effective implementation.
He noted that CITN has provided feedback on the legislation to bolster administrative efficiency and uphold professional rigor, expressing confidence that these contributions would enhance Nigeria’s tax system.
Highlighting CITN’s focus on continuous education, Agbeluyi urged new inductees to uphold integrity and excellence in their careers. Dr. Titilayo Fowokan, Chair of the Membership and Professional Conduct Committee, echoed this sentiment, stressing taxation’s centrality to national development and urging members to leverage CITN’s resources for growth.
The event welcomed 1,461 new members, with 10 honored for exceptional exam performance. Keynote speaker Prof. Yusuf Ali (SAN) underscored taxation’s critical role in national progress, criticizing Nigeria’s historical overreliance on oil revenue, which diluted fiscal accountability. He advocated reviving a culture of tax awareness to foster civic responsibility and governance transparency.
