Akachukwu Nwokedi, president of the Nigerian Gas Association, has been named regional coordinator for Africa by the International Gas Union, positioning Nigeria at the forefront of continental energy policy.

The appointment was announced at the World Gas Conference in Beijing, where Nwokedi takes over from Egyptian engineer Khaled Abubakr, who was elevated to IGU Vice-President.

As regional coordinator, Nwokedi will serve as the primary liaison between the IGU and African member nations, ensuring African interests are represented in global gas policy discussions. His mandate includes promoting natural gas development policies across the continent, facilitating industry knowledge transfer, and coordinating regional collaboration events.

The International Gas Union recognized Nwokedi for his contributions to advancing gas as a driver of energy security across Africa, reinforcing Nigeria’s dominant position in the continent’s gas sector.

Nigeria holds significant influence in African energy markets through its substantial natural gas reserves. The Nigerian Gas Association, which Nwokedi leads, represents both private and public sector interests in the country’s gas industry and advocates for natural gas as a tool for economic growth.

“This appointment represents both an honor and a profound responsibility,” Nwokedi said following the announcement. “It acknowledges Nigeria’s leadership in Africa’s gas sector while providing an important platform to advocate for sustainable energy solutions that will drive economic development across our continent.”

The regional coordinator position is considered crucial for expanding energy access through gas infrastructure development and promoting sustainable energy practices across Africa’s evolving gas sector. Nwokedi’s appointment signals Nigeria’s central role in shaping the continent’s energy future and provides new opportunities to amplify African voices in international energy forums.

Nwokedi emphasized his commitment to strengthening collaboration between African nations and the global gas community while advancing the sustainable development of Nigeria’s gas industry as a catalyst for regional economic growth.
