Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has launched a pioneering capacity enhancement program for Nigerian mining professionals at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia, marking an important step in strengthening Nigeria’s mining sector through international collaboration.
The two-week pilot training, involving eleven Nigerian participants, is a direct outcome of a 2023 bilateral agreement forged during the Africa Down Under Conference in Perth.
The agreement, signed between Dr. Alake and the Government of Western Australia through its Ministry of Mines and Petroleum, alongside Murdoch University, aims to bridge skill gaps in Nigeria’s mining industry. Supported by the Australian Commonwealth Government and the Australian High Commission in Nigeria, the initiative underscores deepening ties between Nigeria and Australia.
The intensive program covers critical areas such as extractive metallurgy, sustainable geochemistry, and mineral science research. Participants will also undertake field trips and engage with industry experts to explore global mining trends, investment opportunities, and sustainability challenges.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Alake described the program as the realization of a vision conceived less than two years ago. “This moment marks the beginning of a transformative journey for Nigeria’s minerals sector,” he said, acknowledging the support of President Bola Tinubu and Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, H.E. Leilani Bin-Juda.
He also thanked Murdoch University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Deeks, and faculty for their warm reception and commitment to the partnership.
Dr. Alake urged the participants to serve as exemplary ambassadors of Nigeria, emphasizing the need to leverage the training to enhance technical capabilities and inform evidence-based policy design. “This program is not just for those attending but for millions of Nigerians who will benefit from a more productive and inclusive minerals sector,” he added.
Professor Deeks welcomed the Nigerian delegation, highlighting the program’s alignment with Murdoch University’s mission to promote ethical and sustainable global resource development through education and research. “This collaboration, backed by the Commonwealth Government, reflects the shared commitment of our nations to knowledge exchange for mutual benefit,” he said.
Western Australia’s Minister for Mines and Petroleum, David Michael, echoed this sentiment, expressing strong support for the initiative and its focus on sustainable resource development.
The program is expected to equip Nigerian professionals with cutting-edge expertise, fostering innovation and growth in Nigeria’s mining sector while strengthening bilateral relations with Australia.
