Nigerian talent has emerged as a formidable force at the upcoming 2026 MOBO Awards, with artists from Africa’s most populous nation securing an impressive presence across multiple categories as the prestigious organization celebrates its 30th anniversary.

The continent’s musical powerhouse has placed six acts in the Best African Music Act category alone, representing 60 percent of the nominees in that field. Leading the charge are some of Nigeria’s biggest names: Davido, Wizkid, Rema, Tiwa Savage, Ayra Starr, Adekunle Gold, and Shallipopi will compete for the coveted honor when the ceremony takes place at Manchester’s Co-op Live arena on March 26.

The Nigerian dominance extends beyond the African music category. Ayra Starr also earned recognition in the Best International Act category as well, placing her among global heavyweights, including American rapper Cardi B and rising star Kehlani. This double nomination underscores the crossover appeal that Nigerian artists have cultivated in recent years, transcending regional boundaries to claim space on the international stage.

The recognition comes at a pivotal moment for Afrobeats and Nigerian music more broadly, which has experienced unprecedented global growth over the past several years. Artists from Lagos to London have been reshaping popular music, with Nigerian sounds influencing everything from hip-hop to R&B across continents.

The MOBO Awards, co-founded by Kanya King and Andy Ruffell three decades ago, have long championed Black music and culture across diverse genres. This year’s nominations reflect the organization’s commitment to recognizing excellence wherever it emerges, from homegrown British talent to international stars making waves globally.

For Nigeria’s music industry, these nominations represent more than individual achievement—they signal the continued ascendancy of West African music on the world stage and the MOBOs’ acknowledgment of its cultural impact.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Nigerian artists have secured a commanding presence at the 2026 MOBO Awards, claiming six of ten nominations in the Best African Music Act category—including heavyweights Wizkid, Davido, and Rema—with Ayra Starr also earning recognition as a Best International Act nominee.

This 60% dominance in the African category underscores Nigeria’s position as the driving force behind Afrobeats’ global explosion and demonstrates the genre’s evolution from regional sound to international phenomenon, now commanding recognition at one of Black music’s most prestigious award ceremonies as the MOBOs celebrate their 30th anniversary.
