The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has commenced the training of technicians and youths in Ondo State on automotive mechatronics to enhance their ability to repair and maintain modern vehicles.
The training, which began on Tuesday in collaboration with the Ondo State Government, is aimed at equipping auto technicians with the necessary skills to service and maintain new-generation vehicles that rely more on electronic systems than traditional mechanical components.
Speaking at the launch of the specialised mechatronics and heavy-duty vehicle training for technicians in the South-West, NADDC Director General Oluwemimo Osanipin emphasized the importance of the initiative in addressing challenges in the evolving automobile industry.
“Today marks another milestone in our automotive industry. This training is strategically designed to upgrade the skills of auto technicians and ensure they can handle repairs and maintenance of modern vehicles, which has become increasingly challenging,” Osanipin stated.
He highlighted the Federal Government’s concern over the rising number of road crashes involving tankers, trailers, and other heavy-duty vehicles, citing recent incidents in Niger and Enugu states that resulted in loss of lives and property. The government, he said, has urged stakeholders to find solutions to these issues.
“Modern heavy-duty vehicles now operate using compression ignition engines, making it essential for mechanics and technicians to acquire the necessary expertise in mechatronics. This training will equip them with the required technical skills to navigate the complexities of modern vehicle systems,” he added.
The two-week training will be conducted in three locations—Calabar (Cross River State), Umuahia (Abia State), and Akure (Ondo State)—for mechatronics, while the heavy-duty vehicle training will take place in Yola (Adamawa State) and Kaduna (Kaduna State).
Osanipin further explained that the training modules would include diesel engine electronics, computerized diesel engine diagnosis using advanced diagnostic tools, and business management and entrepreneurship training.
Declaring the training open, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his Chief of Staff, Segun Omojuwa, reiterated the state government’s commitment to job creation.
“This is a commendable collaboration between the Federal Government and the state. We are pleased to partner in this initiative, as it provides employment opportunities for our youths,” Aiyedatiwa said.
He urged NADDC to sustain the program, ensuring that more young people benefit from the initiative.
