Embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has asserted that Mojisola Meranda, who was appointed as his replacement, has resigned from the position.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels TV on Thursday evening, Obasa insisted that he remains the legitimate Speaker, despite being removed by his colleagues. He claimed that during a meeting with Lagos APC leaders in Marina, Meranda publicly declared her resignation.
Security Changes and Legitimacy Dispute
Addressing concerns over the withdrawal of security aides assigned to Meranda while his own were reinstated, Obasa defended the move, stating:
“When my security was withdrawn without my consent, did I complain? At the Marina meeting, Meranda herself said she had stepped down. When you resign, the paraphernalia of office is removed.”
Obasa maintains that the process leading to his removal, carried out by 36 of the 40-member House, was unconstitutional.
“I have never been removed. I am not against removal, but it must follow the rules of the House and the Constitution,” he asserted.
Tensions at the Assembly Complex
Earlier on Thursday, Obasa arrived at the Lagos State Assembly under heavy security and reportedly presided over a plenary session attended by only four lawmakers, further deepening the leadership crisis.
The controversy surrounding Obasa’s removal and his insistence on retaining his position has sparked tensions within the Assembly, with 36 lawmakers reaffirming their support for Meranda.
