Matty Cash’s well-taken first-half goal handed Aston Villa a hard-fought 1-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday, marking Unai Emery’s third anniversary as Villa manager with a memorable result.
The victory — Villa’s fourth consecutive win in the Premier League — lifted them to seventh place and extended their impressive home record against City to three straight wins. It also snapped Pep Guardiola’s side’s nine-match unbeaten run in all competitions, leaving the champions six points adrift of leaders Arsenal.

City nearly took an early lead when Tijjani Reijnders fired just over the bar in the sixth minute, but Villa soon gained control. Their breakthrough came in the 19th minute following a well-worked short corner. Emiliano Buendia’s cross found Cash on the edge of the box, and the Polish defender struck a precise low shot that curled into the far corner beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma.
“It was a nice strike,” Cash told the BBC. “I’ve scored four this season for club and country. On the edge of the box I like shooting — it’s what I like to do in training, hit them nice and sweet.”

City almost responded immediately when Bernardo Silva broke the offside trap and set up Erling Haaland, but the Norwegian’s close-range effort was denied by Emiliano Martinez. That proved to be City’s best chance of the match, as Villa took control for much of the remaining play.
John McGinn saw a powerful shot deflect wide off John Stones before Ollie Watkins’ free header was blocked from the resulting corner. McGinn went close again early in the second half, meeting another corner with a well-struck effort that was blocked by the City defence.
Villa’s backline held firm as City pushed for an equaliser. Ezri Konsa made a vital interception to stop Savinho’s fierce strike, and Pau Torres cleared the Brazilian’s follow-up off the line. Substitute Jadon Sancho, replacing the injured Buendia, nearly doubled Villa’s lead midway through the second half but was denied twice by Donnarumma from a tight angle.

City’s late push almost paid off in the 89th minute when Haaland turned in a low cross from Phil Foden, but VAR ruled Foden offside in the build-up, cancelling the goal.
“In the first half the pressing wasn’t good, in the second half it was better,” Guardiola told Sky Sports. “We were not aggressive enough. We will learn from that. It’s a long journey — we will try to be close at the end.”
For Villa, the result capped a perfect celebration of Emery’s third year in charge — a testament to the Spaniard’s transformation of the club into a disciplined, high-pressing side capable of defeating the Premier League’s elite.
