The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), under the leadership of its acting national chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, has elected former senator Mao Ohabunwa as the new chairman of its Board of Trustees (BoT).
The election took place on Friday during a ceremony held at the official residence of the FCT minister in Abuja.

At the same event, Isah Dansidi was chosen as the secretary of the board.
During the inauguration, Abdulrahman Mohammed said the reconstitution of the BoT marked a renewed commitment to the core values that once defined the PDP. He emphasized that the party was determined to restore justice, fairness, inclusivity, and respect for the rule of law within its ranks.
“We have come together not merely to inaugurate a new board of trustees but to renew our faith in the ideals that gave birth to this great political family—justice, fairness, inclusivity, and respect for the rule of law,” he said during the event, which took place at the residence of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The acting chairman acknowledged that recent internal conflicts and disputes had weakened the party and diverted it from the principles that originally guided its formation. He also reflected on the challenges the PDP had faced in recent years, attributing much of its internal decay to a deviation from its founding vision.
Abdulrahman particularly noted that the previous board of trustees, led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, had lost what he described as its “moral balance,” and that Wabara’s suspension by the Abia State chapter of the PDP was “a difficult but necessary step” in the party’s ongoing reforms.
“We must also be honest with ourselves—the decay we are correcting today did not start yesterday. It began when we abandoned the principle of zoning before the 2015 elections. It began when we allowed ambition to override equity, and when we ignored the cries of reason from within our own ranks. The consequences of those decisions still haunt us today,” he said.

Reaffirming his commitment to internal reform, Abdulrahman pledged that the new PDP leadership would ensure accountability, transparency, and respect for the party’s constitution. He assured members that the era of impunity and internal manipulation was over.
“I stand before you to assure every member of this great party that under this new leadership, the PDP will never again be held hostage by impunity, manipulation, or disregard for its own constitution,” he said. “We will rebuild this party with transparency. We will respect court judgments and the rule of law. We will conduct our congresses with fairness and integrity. We will restore public trust and make the PDP once again the moral voice of Nigeria’s democracy.”
