The Lagos State Government has sealed the popular Ladipo Spare Parts Market located along the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road on the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway over alleged repeated environmental violations.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the closure on Sunday. He said the action was taken because of indiscriminate waste disposal and illegal street trading in the area.

The state government has continued to maintain a zero-tolerance policy against improper waste disposal and markets that fail to follow environmental rules.

Authorities have also repeatedly warned residents, traders, communities, and private businesses to obey the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017. This law prohibits illegal dumping of refuse on roads, highways, and medians.

Despite several warnings, the government said some markets have continued to ignore environmental guidelines.

Officials noted that this is not the first time Ladipo Spare Parts Market has been shut down for environmental offences. The market was also closed in 2023 over similar issues.

With this development, Ladipo Market has joined other markets in Lagos that have been sealed in recent years for breaking the state’s waste management law.

Some of the markets that have been closed in the past include:

Erukan Market, Mile 12; Oja Oba Market, Ketu; Owoseni Tundas Market; Oba Ogunjobi Market, Mile 12; Shops Owners (BRT Terminal), Mile 12; Mile 12 Bus Stop Shops; Ketu Terminal Market (six plazas); Ifesowapo Shop Owners Market, Mile 12; Demurin Street Plaza Shops, Ketu; The Occupant, 6 Demurin Road, Ketu; Ifelodun Market, Ketu; Ibadan Unit 1 Park between Babajide Sanwo-Olu Market and Ikosi Fruit Market; Ketu Tipper Garage; Itedo Market in Lekki; Sabo Market in Yaba; Gorodom and Alagbafo Markets in Lagos Island; Oko Oba Abattoir in Agege; and Ebute-Ero Market Block N.

The Lagos State Government said it will continue to enforce environmental laws and take action against any market or business that violates waste management regulations.
