Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has already spread to his bones, his personal office confirmed in a statement released on Sunday.
The 81-year-old was reportedly seen last week for increasing urinary symptoms, which led to the discovery of a prostate nodule. A biopsy confirmed prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5)—an indication of a particularly aggressive form of the disease. Further evaluations revealed metastasis to the bone.
Despite the seriousness of the diagnosis, the statement noted that the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, offering hope for effective treatment.
Biden and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his medical team as they prepare for the next steps in managing the condition.
What you should know
Joe Biden’s diagnosis points to a late-stage, high-grade form of prostate cancer, but the hormone-sensitive nature of the disease could allow for therapies that help manage its progression.
