The Independent National Electoral Commission in Rivers State has given approval for the decentralisation of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise to Registration Area and Ward levels throughout the state.
The development was made public in a press statement dated January 30, 2026, and signed by Geraldine Ekelemu, Head of Voter Education and Publicity, on behalf of the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Rivers State.
According to the Commission, the initiative is designed to move voter registration closer to eligible Nigerians and increase participation in the electoral process, especially within communities at the grassroots level.
INEC disclosed that the ward-based Continuous Voter Registration will begin on Monday, February 2, 2026, and will span 50 days, operating on a rotational schedule across the 319 wards in Rivers State.
The Commission explained that the decentralisation forms part of ongoing efforts to widen access to voter registration, remove logistical obstacles, and promote broader inclusion of qualified citizens in Nigeria’s democratic system.
Eligible residents who have reached the age of 18 were encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity when the exercise reaches their respective wards.
INEC noted that the registration exercise is not limited to first-time voters alone, as it also accommodates individuals seeking to transfer their registration, replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards, or make corrections to errors in their voter information.
The Commission further appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society groups, political parties, media organisations, and other relevant stakeholders to assist with awareness campaigns and help ensure a calm and orderly registration process across the state.
INEC reiterated its resolve to strengthen democracy through enhanced voter participation and assured the people of Rivers State that the exercise would be conducted in a transparent, inclusive, and credible manner.
