South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol was released from detention on Saturday, emerging from the detention center with a smile and bowing deeply to his waiting supporters.

As Yoon walked past, his supporters cheered, while an AFP reporter observed the moment before Yoon entered a convoy of vehicles.

“I bow my head in gratitude to the people of this nation,” Yoon said in a statement released through his lawyers.
