The gospel music industry will witness a historic homecoming this August as legendary siblings BeBe and CeCe Winans take the stage to host the 40th Stellar Gospel Music Awards, marking four decades of honoring excellence in gospel music.
The ceremony, scheduled for Saturday, August 16, at Nashville’s prestigious Schermerhorn Symphony Center, represents a full-circle moment for the Winans siblings, who have been instrumental in shaping contemporary gospel music since their breakthrough in the 1980s.
CeCe Winans enters the ceremony not only as co-host but as one of the evening’s most celebrated nominees, securing eight nominations that place her among the night’s top contenders. Only Pastor Mike Jr. and Jason Nelson surpass her recognition, each earning nine nominations in what promises to be a competitive field.
The selection of the Winans siblings as hosts underscores their enduring influence on the genre. Emerging from Detroit’s renowned Winans musical dynasty, BeBe and CeCe revolutionized gospel music by seamlessly weaving contemporary sounds with traditional spiritual messages, creating a template that countless artists have followed.
Their commercial breakthrough came with their self-titled debut album in the 1980s, but it was their 1992 collaboration with Mavis Staples on “I’ll Take You There”—a reimagining of The Staple Singers’ 1972 classic—that demonstrated their crossover appeal, landing them on the Billboard Hot 100. The duo’s 2009 album, “Still,” reached No. 12 on the all-genre Billboard 200, proving their sustained relevance across generations.
The brothers’ and sisters’ trophy case speaks to their artistic excellence: three Grammy Awards, nine Dove Awards, two NAACP Image Awards, two Soul Train Music Awards, and numerous Stellar Awards. Their Grammy victories span nearly two decades, from “Different Lifestyles” in 1992 to both “Still” and the track “Grace” in 2011, showcasing their ability to evolve while maintaining their spiritual core.
This year’s ceremony promises an impressive lineup of performances, featuring a diverse array of gospel luminaries including Donnie McClurkin, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, and Tramaine Hawkins, and rising stars like Jekalyn Carr and MAJOR. The multigenerational roster reflects gospel music’s continued evolution and expanding reach.
“We’re setting the tone for a night that celebrates 40 years of celebrating the greatest in gospel music,” said Jennifer Jackson, president of Central City Productions, emphasizing the significance of this anniversary celebration.
The production team, led by executive producer Don Jackson and director Michael A. Johnson, has crafted an experience that extends beyond the main ceremony. The STELLAR PLUS experience, running Thursday and Friday preceding the awards, offers industry professionals and fans immersive programming that celebrates gospel music’s rich heritage.
A highlight of the extended celebration will be the Stellar Nominee Pre-Show Dinner and Awards at the National Museum of African American Music on Friday, August 15. This invitation-only event, hosted by Dorinda Clark-Cole and Vincent Bohanan, provides an intimate setting for nominees to gather before the main ceremony.
The 40th Stellar Gospel Music Awards represents more than a milestone celebration; it serves as a testament to gospel music’s enduring power to inspire, heal, and unite. With BeBe and CeCe Winans at the helm, the ceremony promises to honor both the genre’s storied past and its bright future, ensuring that the spiritual and cultural significance of gospel music continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
Tickets for the ceremony are available through the Stellar Awards website, with anticipation building for what organizers promise will be an unforgettable evening of musical excellence and spiritual celebration.
