The Federal Fire Service (FFS) on Tuesday confirmed it had successfully contained a fire outbreak at Afriland Tower, a prominent high-rise on Broad Street, Lagos Island.
However, officials said firefighters remain stationed at the site to monitor the situation and assess the building’s structural integrity.
According to a statement issued by Deputy Controller Paul Abraham, National Public Relations Officer of the Service, the emergency call was received at 1:24 p.m., triggering the rapid deployment of the White Watch and Campus units.
Preliminary findings indicated that the fire began in the inverter room located in the basement of the tower, before thick smoke spread to upper floors. Firefighters quickly began evacuating occupants while simultaneously tackling the blaze, preventing panic and halting the flames from escalating.
The Service explained that teams are still on the ground to ensure full extinguishment, continuous monitoring, and safety checks on the building.
Officials urged occupants to cooperate with emergency personnel while the exercise continues, and expressed appreciation to the public for their support during the operation.
The FFS also reminded Nigerians to remain alert to potential fire hazards and report emergencies immediately by dialing 112 or calling 0803 200 3557.
“Early alerts save lives,” the agency emphasized in its statement.
