The Federal Ministries of Water Resources and Sanitation, and Marine and Blue Economy have committed to working together to enhance food production in Nigeria. This collaboration aims to maximize the country’s water resources to strengthen agriculture and ensure sustainable food security.
During a high-level meeting in Abuja, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, and Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev, underscored the significance of inter-ministerial cooperation in managing water resources, marine conservation, and advancing Nigeria’s blue economy.
Professor Utsev emphasized the partnership’s importance, noting its role in sustaining Nigeria’s water bodies, which are essential for public health, food security, job creation, and economic development. He highlighted key initiatives under his ministry, including clean water supply, irrigation management, hydropower generation, fisheries development, and flood control.
Oyetola, on his part, pointed out the vast untapped potential of Nigeria’s water bodies in fisheries and economic growth. He called for a stronger alliance to improve fish production and ensure the sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems.
To formalize this collaboration, both ministries will establish a joint committee to develop a working framework with clear guidelines to maximize the benefits of Nigeria’s water resources for national development.
