The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has officially called off the strike action embarked upon by primary school teachers since March 24, 2025.
Following this development, all primary school teachers in the FCT have been directed to resume academic activities on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
This announcement was made public in a communique issued after the State Wing Executive Council Meeting of the union, held on July 4, 2025. The communique was released to the press on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, and shared with Channels Television.
According to the union, the decision to suspend the prolonged strike came after the intervention of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The minister reportedly ordered the disbursement of N16 billion to offset a portion of the outstanding salaries owed to the affected teachers.
In the communique, the NUT leadership expressed appreciation to its members for their dedication and unity throughout the duration of the strike.
The union commended the teachers for remaining resilient and committed to the cause of better welfare and working conditions, describing their actions as an affirmation of solidarity and professional resolve.
“We acknowledge and deeply appreciate the commitment, patience, and collective strength demonstrated by all our members during the difficult period of this industrial action,” the union stated.
The strike, which lasted nearly four months, had disrupted academic activities across FCT primary schools and sparked conversations around the welfare of teachers and the funding of public education in Nigeria. The union’s demands centered on the non-payment of salaries and other entitlements due to primary school teachers.
Now that a portion of the arrears has been addressed, the union has opted for dialogue and continued engagement, while urging the government to meet the remaining demands to avoid further disruptions in the education sector.
The NUT reiterated its commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of teachers across the FCT and expressed optimism that the current resolution would serve as a foundation for improved relations between the government and the education workforce.
