In order to stop outbreaks, the House of Representatives has urged the federal government to launch extensive vaccination and awareness programs against diphtheria in schools nationwide.

Following the diphtheria outbreak at King’s College Lagos, the House of Representatives spokesperson, Akin Rotimi, sponsored a resolution of public interest that prompted the green chamber to make the call.

Rotimi clarified in a lead argument that the outbreak led to the hospitalization of multiple students and the death of a 12-year-old youngster.

He claims that the outbreak highlights shortcomings in school infection prevention and control protocols.

In order to evaluate and improve infection prevention and emergency response protocols in schools, the House adopted a motion directing its Committees on Health and Basic Education to collaborate with pertinent organizations, such as the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, or NCDC.

In order to guarantee early identification and prompt response to infectious disease outbreaks, the House further directed the NCDC to create and execute a systematic disease surveillance system in each federal unity college.
