Former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has officially withdrawn his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), pointing to the party’s failure to provide credible leadership and address Nigeria’s deepening governance crisis.

In a resignation letter dated July 4, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Ward 1 Chairman in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Melaye communicated his immediate exit from the party. The letter was made public via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday.

“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement,” Melaye declared in the letter.

He explained that the decision was not taken lightly but became necessary due to what he described as the party’s “lack of potency and capacity” to rescue the nation from its present political and socio-economic challenges. According to him, the PDP has failed to confront the “political cankerworms” currently plaguing the country.

Melaye, who was the PDP’s flagbearer in the 2023 Kogi State governorship election, noted that his departure followed a thorough evaluation of the party’s direction, which he could no longer align with.

“Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in the activities of the parties or lend my support to her agenda,” he wrote.

In the letter, he also called on the party to regard his resignation as total and final, urging the leadership at all levels to acknowledge his complete disengagement from PDP structures and operations.

“In view of the above, please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” Melaye concluded.

Despite his disappointment with the party, Melaye acknowledged the platform the PDP provided during his years of membership and expressed appreciation for the opportunities to serve.

“Thank you for the opportunity to serve under the platform during my period of membership,” he said in the closing paragraph of the letter.

Melaye’s exit adds to the growing list of high-profile defections and resignations that continue to affect the PDP, as internal divisions and questions over leadership direction plague the former ruling party.

What You Should Know

Dino Melaye’s resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party is not merely a routine political exit—it represents a critical moment in the PDP’s turbulent trajectory.

A vocal and controversial figure in Nigerian politics, Melaye was once seen as one of the party’s more energetic and media-savvy personalities.

His decision to step away underscores increasing dissatisfaction among party stalwarts who feel the PDP has lost its direction and ability to challenge the ruling APC effectively.

Coming just two years ahead of the 2027 general elections, Melaye’s departure may trigger a domino effect, prompting further introspection or realignment within Nigeria’s opposition political landscape.
